INSET Training

Here at Forest Schools Birmingham CIC we pride ourselves on being one of the leading, award winning providers of Forest School and Outdoor Learning services in the UK. Therefore when providing training, we are coming from the perspective of a wealth of expertise. Our trainer is a conservationalist and educator who is passionate about the benefits of Outdoor Learning and Forest Schools. Our INSET days are fun and inspiring and designed to suit you, your staff and your setting.

As a rule of thumb we include the following however upon booking, our trainer will contact you to discuss your specific needs.

• An introduction to Forest Schools and outdoor learning
• Skills to enhance your outdoor practice
• Ideas for outdoor sessions; how to approach an outdoor curriculum
• Child development, learning styles and theories
• Demonstrate how to utilise your outdoor space effectively
• As well as specific Q&A with a highly experienced trainer

Forest School Training


Here at Outdoor Learning UK we are more than just a training company, we are a community and a support network. We want to guide you through your training and practice. From planning, designing and installing your site, offering support in your setting to get started or just a place to ask questions and advice. We are here for the journey.


Our Forest School training is accredited by the Open College Network. It is of the very highest standard with practical skills and safety as its backbone. Underpinned with sound and engaging development theories; rather than telling you about Forest School we show you Forest School, employing creative, fun and practical training techniques.


We have  wonderful venue in the leafy outskirts of Birmingham. A Cadbury heritage site with 4 acres of mature woodland. There is residential accomodation available onsite for those wishing to travel from further afield. Easily accessed from junction 4 on the M5 motorway.

Forest Schools Practitioner Award


Our training consists of:

• a one week intensive initial training period.

• a personal development and portfolio period of approx 6 months.

• regular email prompts to keep you on track.

• support from your trainer during your personal development period.

• an assessment week which examines your practical skills and your understanding of delivery techniques and approaches.

• a 3 month consolidation period after your assessment to submit your portfolio.

• ongoing support from the office to get up and running.

Forest School Taster Diary

This day will give you the opportunity to experience for yourself what a forest school session would feel like. Our trainer will give you a fun, inspiring day in our own 4 acre wood that will leave you feeling enlightened and ready to take your next step on your Forest School path.

The day will include:

• The Forest Schools ethos

• Learning and engaging individuals in the outdoors

• Practical skills development

• Using fire and tools in an educational setting

• Simple cooking over a fire

We would recommend anyone interested in undertaking the full OCN Forest Schools training to have a taste first!

First Aid for Forest School and Outdoor Learning

We are proud to have a 1st Aid trainer with the very highest credentials. Emily Williams is a practicing qualified nurse, with extensive experience of working in highly volatile, outdoor situations. This course has been written by a medical professional to specifically enhance your Forest School and Outdoor Learning delivery. In addition to the usual content of a First Aid course, you will also become competent in dealing with a range of possible injuries you may encounter in a typical Forest School or Outdoor Learning session.

This course is accredited by the Open College Network.

Your training will take place over a period of 2 consecutive days.
